THURSDAY: Ideal ways to waste time

Sometimes I go on the computer with the sole purpose of wasting time. I'm sure a lot of people do this. But apart from Facebook, MSN and all that, what are the most effective methods of wasting time? Here's a list:

-Flash games. I think you already knew I'd mention this, but you can't just play any old flash game. You need to feel like you're wasting time while playing. The game has to be so stupid you know that every second you spend on it is completely pointless. Try this game.

-Wikipedia. Depending on your interests, you can spend hours of time reading about stuff on Wikipedia. I waste a lot of time reading articles about food. An interesting article I found recently is the History of McDonald's.

- TV Tropes. This site catalogues devices and tricks used in any sort of media. Whether this be TV shows, movies, books, anime, music or whatever. Here's one of the more interesting articles. (link)

- StumbleUpon. Basically there's a list of topics and you tick the ones you like. You'll then be taken to a random website that will be relevant to your interests. I actually installed the toolbar of this but uninstalled it later because it ate up so much time.

- IMDb. Register for an account then read the message boards of a movie you really like. I can spend an hour reading message boards, even though I have never posted a single thing. If you like movies, a lot of time can also be spent on rogerebert.com. Ebert can be pretty funny when reviewing bad movies. I eagerly anticipate his review for the new Brendan Fraser film, 'Furry Vengeance'.

And that's how I like to waste my time on the internet. I hope anyone who reads this will be inspired to find interesting and creative ways to waste their own time too.

THURSDAY

School hasn't been going very well for me. Most of my results have fallen short of expectations. So I've been feeling pretty bad about it.

While I was walking home today, I saw this great big guy, wearing a sleeveless hoodie and appearing like he was really looking for trouble. He starts intimidating this old asian man who walks past him, yelling offensive things and trying to walk into him.

He really brightened my day. I do feel bad for the old guy, who looked pretty confused and tried to walk away calmly. The other man, however, was trying to feel good about himself by being a total jerk to some stranger.

The point of this whole post is that whenever you feel bad about yourself, just remember, there are some serious losers out there.

Eels

Did you see the story about the Chinese man who died after his friends inserted a live eel into his rectum as a practical joke when the man was asleep?

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?sid=2778

This tragic situation, which I think we all agree is not funny, raises many questions.

1. With friends like that, who needs enemas?

2. How low did this man set the bar for friends?

3. What were his friends imbibing when they came up with this idea, and how can I get some of that?

4. How difficult is it to insert an eel into a rectum? Did they straighten and freeze the eel a little bit first? Otherwise it seems like trying to push a rope through a keyhole.

5. How did the man sleep through it?

In my own life, I have a strict rule for determining who to call my friends. Rule 46 states that any person who tries to insert a live eel into my rectum is automatically disqualified. If the eel is dead, obviously that's just good fun. I'm not a killjoy.

As a conspiracy enthusiast, I have to wonder if the friends were trying to cover up an even more embarrassing violation of the presumably drunken victim's hindquarters.

Friend 1: "Uh-oh. When he wakes up, he's going to know what we did."

Friend 2: "Not if we put a live octopus in his rectum. That should cover our tracks."

Friend 1: "That's insane! You can't put a live octopus in a rectum!"

Friend 2: "Live eel?"

Friend 1: "Fine. Remind me to never be the first one who falls asleep in this crowd."

Office quote of the day: One minority from this branch is going to get into this program. Who would I prefer? Hmm. A competent hard-working one who does things his own way? Or the malleable simpleton who can be bought for a few fashion magazines?

THURSDAY: Mars 500

I read an article in the paper today about the Mars 500 experiment.

Basically six men will spend at least 520 days in a sealed, five-chamber metal unit in what will be a simulation of a journey to Mars. Their days will be strictly divided into eight hours sleep, eight hours work and eight hours leisure. The only contact with the outside world they will have is with mission controllers and loved ones. Communication will be made with a 20 minute delay to simulate deep space conditions.

None of the six men have been chosen but there are plenty of eager candidates, which is quite impressive. I doubt most of us would sign up for something like this. Space travel is a very exciting prospect and the European Space Agency says that preparing humans for flights over a year and half remains a big issue.

Iron Man 2

This is probably one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The first Iron Man was really good so i was really excited about this one (ask any of the people who went to watch it with me).

I guess the amount of enjoyment you get out of this movie really depends on how high you can suspend your belief for 2 hours. For me, the part which sort of burst my bubble was when Tony (iron man) discovers an atomic structure hidden within the model of a city. Too much like the 'the Da Vinci Code' for me. I also found the climax (lolol) a bit cheesy. But other than that it was so awesome. It has more action and is more fun than the previous Iron Man. It's not as good as the first one in terms of emotional impact blah blah blah but the several HOLY SHIT moments certainly make up for it. Plus there's still Robert Downey Jr.
4/5
If you want you can wait after the credits, there's an extra scene. Not really worth it unless you're with friends because then you get to at least talk about how awesome the movie was during the credits.

Office quote of the day: Where's my cookie? Oh wait... I'm sitting on it.

SUNDAY

The death scene in Bonnie and Clyde is pretty awesome. (link)

(Start watching the video at 1:10 to skip to the exciting bit)

I haven't even watched the movie, just that little clip because someone told me about it.

What happened to the real Bonnie and Clyde wasn't much different. According to Wikipedia, the only difference with the movie was that they never managed to get out of the car. The official coroner report said they received a total of 40 exit wounds. All of the six officers that shot them were equipped with high-velocity armour piercing rounds. They were all temporarily deafened after the ambush from all that gunfire.
